A four-year term on Mackay Regional Council, as well as time spent chairing and volunteering with a number of local organisations including the Road Accident Action Group, Rotary, City Safe, Crime Stoppers, Mackay & District Italian Association, PCYC, Mackay Show Association and the Mackay Turf Club, has consolidated his understanding of the region.
